Apparently, there was a disease out there that turned you into a gross-looking person with blue skin and dark circles under your eyes. And if you got hurt, you couldn’t heal. Not only was the disease out there, but there were so many people infected Louisa had her own side-business based on covering those people. I didn’t understand why they needed new jobs and lives just because they were sick and looked bad. I’d never had my own family, but was pretty sure most people would not abandon their daughter because she was sick and turned blue.

I hoped the disease wasn’t contagious. I didn’t think Louisa would have let me be around Petra if she felt there was a risk I’d get sick. But maybe she would. Maybe if I got sick, she would be able to make money off me like I was another of her clients. It was not a nice thought.

I was sure the weird lines in the pantry created a secret door. I had to find a way to get in there and figure out what was hidden behind the pantry. I would have to pull out my maps and floor plans of the house to find clues. I wondered what other secrets the house might be hiding. I felt surrounded by them.

Talking. Not being able to talk was going to seriously get in the way of my investigations. I needed to find a way to start. Maybe I could try singing or whispering first to ease into it. Or mime.

I pictured myself dressed in black, my face painted white, silently miming out questions to Louisa about the blue people and laughed under my breath. I tossed my notebook down and stared thoughtfully at the cover, trying to organize everything in my head.

After enough time had passed, I pulled myself out of bed and tiptoed down the stairs to peer into the kitchen. It was empty. The table had been wiped clean and the case with all the make-up inside was gone. All traces of Petra had been swept up like she’d never even been there at all.
